When you use Talk 121’s local chat lines to meet someone special, you might encounter a person who is a bit shy. Maybe they aren’t as forthcoming with information as you are, or maybe they just don’t go as in depth as you would like them to. How can you pry open a clam? We’ve got some tips for you.

1. A gentle approach is best.

Don’t try to force someone to tell you all about themselves, as that might make them clamp down even harder. Instead, just gently as questions that go more in depth. If you sense that someone is getting defensive, then back down, circle around, and know what questions to leave in the dust to return to at a later date.

2. Create a safe space.

If you’re talking about a serious topic, let them know that you’re not going to judge them for what they say, and that you’re a safe person to talk to. In order to create a safe space, you might have to show some vulnerability first! Tell the apple of your eye a secret of your own to help them feel comfortable opening up.

3. Be empathetic.

Even if they don’t feel like sharing their most personal details with you, be empathetic with what the person on the other end of the chat line is telling you. Try to identify with what they’re saying and be their ally! A supportive conversation can set the stage for a great date, an awesome relationship and much, much more.

4. Show appreciation when they do share.

When a shy or closed up person does share something personal, showing appreciation for that can help them to feel comfortable sharing even more with you, allowing you to get to know them better.
