Demi-sexual is a term used to describe someone who only experiences sexual attraction after forming a deep emotional connection with another person. Unlike people who experience sexual attraction based on physical appearance or other factors, demi-sexual individuals typically need to develop a close emotional bond before they can feel sexual desire. This can apply to people of any gender or sexual orientation.

Demi-sexuality exists on the asexual spectrum, as it emphasizes the importance of emotional intimacy in experiencing sexual attraction. It’s distinct from romantic attraction, which can occur without the need for a sexual connection. A demi-sexual person may still experience romantic attraction without sexual desire, and once that emotional connection is established, sexual attraction may develop.

Example:
A person who identifies as demi-sexual might not feel sexual attraction to someone they meet at a party or through casual encounters. However, if they form a deep emotional connection with someone over time—such as through friendship or a meaningful relationship—they may begin to feel sexual attraction toward that person. For them, emotional bonding is the key factor in experiencing sexual desire.
